Several studies reported elevated levels of biomarkers of inflammation and endothelial dysfunction, including monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), interferon-γ-inducible protein of 10 kDa, interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α, soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1) in the vitreous from patients with PDR and diabetic macular edema [4-8]. The gene discussed is CCL2; the disease is diabetic macular edema.
