The principal characteristic of fulminant viral hepatitis (FH) induced by the murine hepatitis virus strain-3 (MHV-3) is severe hepatocellular necrosis, which is mediated by the fibrinogen-like protein 2 (FGL2), a molecule that has the capacity to promote fibrinogen deposition and activate the coagulation cascades. Here, FGL2 is linked to fulminant viral hepatitis.
