The associations identified in this study are robust, and several have been previously identified in GWAS studies of immunologically relevant phenotypes, such as the association of celiac disease with the chromosome 2q31.1 locus containing ITGA4. ITGA4 encodes an alpha integrin subunit present on monocytes, lymphocytes, endothelial cells and erythrocytes that serves as an adhesion molecular receptor for VCAM-1, fibronectin. Here, FN1 is linked to celiac disease.
