This enzyme, class I phosphatidylinositol 3’ kinase (PI3K), was subsequently found to be responsible for converting phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) to phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5-trisphosphate (PIP3), and has been implicated in biological processes from insulin-mediated regulation of glucose uptake and metabolism to transformation and even metastatic dissemination of tumor cells [1]. The gene discussed is PIK3CA; the disease is neoplasm.
