Quantitative analysis (ELISA) confirmed the very high concentrations of this protein in BAL of IPF patients, presumably due to the elevated number and massive activation of polymorphonuclear cells in this disease (indeed calgranulin B concentrations in BAL showed a positive correlation with neutrophil/eosinophil percentages in BAL) [50]. The gene discussed is S100A9; the disease is idiopathic interstitial pneumonia.
