It was concluded that homozygosity for thermolabile MTHFR may be a risk factor for schizophrenia-like psychosis, and that this risk might be reduced by folate supplementation.88 In a small study, homocysteine was significantly higher in patients with schizophrenia who had low serum folate concentrations (n = 6) than in control subjects with low serum folate concentrations (n = 8).89 The gene discussed is MTHFR; the disease is schizophrenia.
