S100A8 and diabetes mellitus: MRP8 and MRP14, belonging to the S100 protein family, are expressed in activated human granulocytes and macrophages in inflammatory lesions, and have multiple functions such as activating NADPH oxidase [4-6], toll-like receptor 4 and receptor for advanced glycation endproducts (RAGE) [7,8] which are vital signaling pathways involved in the pathogenesis of micro- and macro-vascular complications in diabetes.
