Nevertheless, we have shown that exchanging as little as 12 or 15 amino acids in the fungal PiT protein, Pho-4+, with human PiT1 or human PiT2 sequences, respectively, results in proteins that support infection by human PiT1 or PiT2 cognate gamma-retroviruses [25,26]; results, which suggest that these transporters are structurally highly related.
