CD4 and infection: Only one RCT (Kaplan 2005) included HIV positive patients and, although infections were accurately reported, we could not use them in the meta-analysis since disaggregate data of infections during therapy and during follow-up were not provided (it is noteworthy that this study found a statistically significant increase of risk of infection in the R-C arm mainly due to patients with pre-treatment CD4 counts less than 50 cells/ml).
