The serum levels of three mediators, VEGF (55 ± 21 pg/ml vs. 17 ± 3.2 pg/ml, P = 0.03), angiopoietin-2 (62,379 ± 6,020 pg/ml vs. 5,892 ± 510 pg/ml, P < 0.0001), and SDF-1 (4,223 ± 360 pg/ml vs. 2,143 ± 117 pg/ml, P < 0.0001) were significantly higher in patients with sepsis than in healthy controls (Figure 3).
