RORC and cancer: Elaborating on this insight, which follows from the antagonistic pleiotropy theory of aging, he argues that TOR's growth-promoting and other activities are critical for development, and that purposeless, post-developmental continuation of TOR activity, in conjunction with cell-cycle arrest (a conserved function necessary to prevent cancer), is a key driver of cellular “hyper-function” that leads to hypertrophy, hyperplasia and cell senescence underlying the aging process.
