However, at least two out of the top ten loci where we found associations with HDL particle number (Table S3) have previously been implicated in lipid traits: HNF4a (encoding hepatocyte nuclear factor α; lead SNP rs3212197, p = 0.00028, q = 0.64) is a known MODY (mature onset diabetes of the young) gene that has been associated with HDL cholesterol and apoA1 in recent GWAS [20], [36], while TRIB1 (tribbles homolog 1; lead SNP rs4871598, p = 0.00030, q = 0.64) has been correlated with triglyceride levels in the same studies. This evidence concerns the gene APOA1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
