Several studies have shown that NT-proBNP could serve as an independent predictor of greater mortality in patients with cardiogenic shock [9], septic shock [10], severe sepsis [11], as well as in noncardiac [12-14] or unselected ICU patients [15], while another study [16] demonstrated that NT-proBNP failed to predict short-term mortality of ICU patients with hypoxic respiratory failure.
