Since ALDH-2, beyond bioactivating organic nitrates, was recently identified as an important protective enzyme, preventing ischemic damage in experimental myocardial infarction [78], the conservation of the enzymatic activity of ALDH-2 by an organic nitrate may be of great importance for long-term treatment of patients with ischemic heart disease. The gene discussed is ALDH2; the disease is myocardial infarction.
