A recent study addressing the association of inflammatory markers and diabetic retinopathy in pregnancy failed to find statistically significant increases in levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and vascular adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) in the plasma of diabetic women compared to non-diabetic controls, although the IL-6 value tended to be higher in diabetic as opposed to nondiabetic women [5]. The gene discussed is IL6; the disease is diabetic retinopathy.
