Results from our systematic review and meta-analysis indicate that after 6 months of metformin therapy in children and adolescents with insulin resistance there was a statistically significant mean decrease in fasting insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA) and body mass index (BMI) of 9.6 microU/ml (95% CI: 6.3 to 13.0) and 2.7 kg/m2 (95% CI: 1.7 to 3.6), respectively, compared to the placebo control group [25].
