PEMT and steatosis: Accumulation of AdoHcy has the potential to inhibit a wide range of cellular methylases, and recent work studying ethanol-induced liver injury found that relatively mild decreases in the hepatic AdoMet/AdoHcy ratio impair the phosphatidylethanolamine methyltransferase (PEMT)-mediated conversion of phosphatidylethanolamine to phosphatidylcholine, resulting in steatosis that could be reversed when the AdoMet/AdoHcy ratio was normalized by betaine treatment [18].
