AKT1 and cancer: We previously reported [9], [11], [12] that SCD1, by converting SFA into MUFA, regulates cancer cell lipogenesis by: i) maintaining ACC in its activate state though the conversion of saturated acylCoAs which are allosteric inhibitors of ACC into MUFA; ii) promoting the dephosphorylation and inactivation of AMPK, the main cancer cell fuel sensor that targets ACC for phosphorylation/inactivation; and iii) inducing the activation of the Akt pathway, which activates the expression of key lipogenic enzymes [3].
