The rd1/rd1 mouse [22,23] is a widely used photoreceptor degeneration model that undergoes rapid retinal degeneration due to a defect in the β-subunit of a rod-specific cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)- phosphodiesterase and lacks the entire photoreceptor layer in adulthood [22].
