CD14 and fibrosis: We observed a significant increase of CD14+CD16+ cells in cirrhosis (p = 0.02 compared to F2–F3 fibrosis, p = 0.001 compared to F0–F1), which account for approximately 50% of the total intrahepatic monocytes/macrophages in cirrhotic, but only for about 10% in non-cirrhotic livers, and mostly explain the total increase in hepatic macrophages in cirrhosis (Fig. 3C).
