Among other such genes identified in the study were the VLDL-receptor and other lipid metabolism related genes, suggesting that IVNS1ABP may represent just the kind of obesity predisposing thrifty genes that have been hypothesized to be enriched in the Oceanian populations with a well known current epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes in conjunction with the westernization of their diets and lifestyle. The gene discussed is IVNS1ABP; the disease is obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
