NXN and cancer: In brief, TRG1 (complete regression) showed absence of residual cancer and fibrosis extending through the different layers of the oesophageal wall; TRG2 was characterised by the presence of rare residual cancer cells scattered through the fibrosis; TRG3 was characterised by an increase in the number of residual cancer cells but fibrosis predominated; TRG4 showed residual cancer outgrowing fibrosis; and TRG5 was characterised by the absence of regressive changes (Mandard et al, 1994).
