Although previous studies showed that overexpression or constitutive expression of Akt confers TRAIL resistance in cancer cells [11], [14], this study is unique because our work indicates that inducible activation of the Akt/mTOR survival pathway counteracts TRAIL-induced apoptosis, leading to TRAIL resistance, as opposed to previous studies in which overexpression or constitutive activation of Akt caused TRAIL resistance [11], [14]. The gene discussed is TNFSF10; the disease is cancer.
