In Cox proportional hazards regression models controlling for classic risk factors (age as the time scale, sex, high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, non-HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure, antihypertensive medication, current smoking, blood glucose, and history of CVD at baseline), four biomarkers were significantly associated with incident diabetes in both cohorts: adiponectin inversely, and CRP, interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra), and ferritin directly (Fig. 1).
