APOE and viral infectious disease: Interestingly both peptides showed significantly less antiviral activity than apoEdp (Figure 1), and no antibacterial activity (data not shown), perhaps reflecting the substitution of four of the Leu residues in the human apoEdp peptide for Met, and disruption of the pattern of charged residues within apoEdp, both of which have previously been found to decrease the activity of apoEdp [9], and suggesting that apoE may not affect viral infection in those mammals which do not share the human apoE141-149 sequence.
