MAPT and Alzheimer disease: Indeed, the microtubule associated protein tau, which is phosphorylatedduring this phase of the cell cycle in a mitotic-competent cell, has also beenconsistently reported to be abnormally phosphorylated in AD and colocalizeswith cell cycle regulators [32,33,45,48-50].Moreover, tau can be phosphorylated by CDK1 [51] andCDK1-like protein [52,53].Therefore, abnormally increased levels of tau phosphorylation could beexplained in the context of an unsuccessful attempt to modulate G2 neuronalarchitecture and prepare it for mitosis, leading to programmed cell death.
