After a period of relative inactivity a sudden surge of interest became apparent in 1990's when several groups in the USA and Western Europe have published the potential of cholesterol, LDL, oxidized form of LDL, beta 2-glycoprotein, heat-shock protein 65 (HSP-65), and avian herpesvirus as vaccine antigens capable of preventing atherosclerosis [20-29]. This evidence concerns the gene HSPD1 and atherosclerosis.
