These results are consistent with the observations that Americans of African ancestry are disproportionately affected by obesity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease [1] as well as recent studies classifying SREBF1 as a candidate gene both at an expression and genetic level for these same diseases [50], [51], [52], [53], [54]. Here, SREBF1 is linked to obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
