During attacks, patients have elevated levels of acute phase reactants, especially of SAA, that leads in some patients to RA as a result of renal deposition of protein amyloid A. This reactive systemic amyloidosis, called AA-amyloidosis, which may develop over years and progress to terminal renal failure, is the major complication of FMF [10]. Here, SAA1 is linked to primary systemic amyloidosis.
