It has been shown in a number of studies (see [25] and references therein) that hypermethylation of the MGMT promoter is a frequent event in various cancers (that is, is relevant for diagnosis), that it is associated with decreased survival if the cancer is untreated (that is, is relevant for prognosis), and that it renders tumors susceptible to alkylating drugs such as temozolomide (that is, is also relevant for therapy optimization). The gene discussed is MGMT; the disease is cancer.
