The relation between coagulation and inflammation in sepsis is already known [44-46]; and it is possible that MMPs/TIMPs may also play a role in the coagulation/fibrinolysis response in sepsis, as suggested by studies showing that MMP-9 inhibits platelet aggregation [39,40] and a positive correlation between TIMP-1 and PAI-1 [38].
