WNT5A and melanoma: The intervention objective is based on a study in which experimentally increasing the levels of the Wnt5a protein secreted by a melanoma cell line via genetic engineering methods directly altered the metastatic competence of that cell as measured by the standard in vitro assays for metastasis and in which an intervention that blocked the Wnt5a protein from activating its receptor, the use of an antibody that binds the Wnt5a protein, substantially reduced Wnt5a's ability to induce a metastatic phenotype [19].
