Many signalling molecules involved in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF) or interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) cause alterations of the lipid composition in the cell membrane by activation of various phospholipases, sphingomyelinases and other lipid modifying enzymes [1]–[4]. The gene discussed is IL1B; the disease is inflammatory bowel disease.
