In the univariate analysis, the following variables were significantly associated with a diagnosis of cryptococcal meningitis (Table 4): male gender (p = 0.040), a generalised headache (p = 0.008), WHO stage (p < 0.001), CD4 cell count below 200 cells/ml (p < 0.001), change in head position worsens headache (p < 0.001), neck stiffness (p < 0.001), Kernig's sign (p = 0.015), and papilloedema (p = 0.005). Here, CD4 is linked to optic papillitis.
