We suppose that during the acute phase of HIV-1 infection accompanied by stimulation of the immune system [66]–[70], memory CD4+ T cells harboring reactivation-resistant latent HIV-1 that contained hypermethylated promoters have a better chance to escape from virus-induced cytopathic effects and cytotoxic responses than those infected with reactivation-prone hypomethylated provirus. This evidence concerns the gene CD4 and HIV-1 infection.
