Over 50% of women with PCOS have excess levels of adrenal androgens [34], but it is not known whether this excess reflects hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis dysfunction due to exaggerated pituitary secretion of ACTH in response to hypothalamic CRH, excess responsiveness of adrenal androgens to ACTH stimulation, or both [33], [34]. This evidence concerns the gene POMC and polycystic ovary syndrome.
