The HF diet produced a 36±7% (69±3 vs. 94±4 g) increase in body mass, as compared to control (p<0.05) (Fig. 1A), which was accompanied by functional resistance to icv-injected leptin and insulin, as determined by the capacity of the hormones to inhibit 12-h spontaneous food intake [leptin, 55±8% and 21±5% inhibition in control and HF, respectively (p<0.05); insulin, 41±6% and 18±3% in control and HF, respectively (p<0.05)] (Fig. 1B–C). The gene discussed is LEP; the disease is hydrops fetalis.
