The associated region does not contain any known protein-coding sequence and lacks any evident functional consequence [2,4], but a strong RA candidate gene, the tumor necrosis factor-α-induced protein 3 (TNFAIP3) gene (also known as A20), is at about 185 kilobases (kb; Figure 1 shows the positions of these two loci). This evidence concerns the gene TNFAIP3 and rheumatoid arthritis.
