The transcription factor HIF-1α (hypoxia-inducible factor 1α) is frequently overexpressed in human gastric cancer, and inhibition of HIF-1α has proven antitumour efficacy in rodent models, whereas the relevance of HIF-1α for the metastatic phenotype of gastric adenocarcinoma remains elusive. The gene discussed is HIF1A; the disease is gastric cancer.
