The majority of KIT mutations in mucosal melanomas (11 out of 16 tumours in Curtin et al (2006), 3 out of 3 in Antonescu et al (2007), 4 out of 4 in Rivera et al (2008) and 5 out of 6 in our study) were detected in the juxtamembrane region of KIT encoded by exons 11 and 13, presumably resulting in the activation of c-KIT. The gene discussed is KIT; the disease is melanoma.
