VEGFA and ovarian carcinoma: Although microvascular density, a commonly used surrogate marker for tumour angiogenic potential, has not been shown to correlate convincingly with prognosis in ovarian cancer (Sonmezer et al, 2004; Gadducci et al, 2006), both pre-clinical and clinical studies investigating the VEGF family and its downstream signalling pathways have indicated the key importance of angiogenesis in the pathophysiology of ovarian cancer.
