Among defensins, the human β-defensin 1 (DEFB1 [OMIM *602056]) promoter has been extensively studied since specific polymorphisms and haplotypes of it have been associated with asthma and atopy [12], susceptibility to severe sepsis [13], as well as HIV [14,15] and Candida [16] infection predisposition.
