Two of the angiogenic growth factors, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and placental growth factor (PlGF) are thought to contribute to normal trophoblastic proliferation and implantation (Thadhani et al. 2004), and it has been hypothesized that an imbalance in levels of these growth factors has a crucial role in preeclampsia.
