Over expression of syndecan-1 has been observed in pancreatic, gastric and breast carcinomas, correlating with increased tumor aggressiveness and poor clinical prognosis, while syndecan-2 is often over expressed in colon carcinoma, and syndecan-4 is up-regulated in hepatocellular carcinoma [30], coinciding with heparanase up-regulation in these carcinomas [22], [25]. The gene discussed is HPSE; the disease is hepatocellular carcinoma.
