Many riskfactors for AMD are related to inflammation, includingenvironmental factors, such as smoking and low intake of omega-3 fatty acid [98, 99], and genetic factors, such aspolymorphisms of complement factor H [100–102]and the chemokine receptor CX3CR, which is expressed by microglia andmediates migration and adhesion in response to its ligand fractalkine or CX3CL1 [103]. Here, CX3CL1 is linked to age-related macular degeneration.
