The Abl inhibitor Gleevec, a well tolerated drug which has become a mainstay for the treatment for chronic myelogenous leukemia and stromal tumors with few side effects [41], has been shown to protect against vaccinia virus infection in mice [53] and may prove to be effective against P. aeruginosa and other pathogens that subvert Abl kinase-dependent pathways. Here, ABL1 is linked to chronic myelogenous leukemia, BCR-ABL1 positive.
