The significant difference of the intensity ratio (I875/I1450) between normal and dysplasia tissue may reflect the relative changes in the concentration of potential biological markers from cell surface antigens, cytoplasmic proteins and mucin, collagen in the extracellular matrix, enzymes, and hormones in dysplasia (Correa, 1988; Mahadevan-Jansen and Richards-Kortum, 1996). The gene discussed is MUC5AC; the disease is dysplasia.
