Since in the normal gastrointestinal tract KIT is exclusively expressed by the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC), specialized cells that interact with neural and muscular structures that have a pacemaker activity, the authors suggested that gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) might derive from ICC or from stem cells differentiating toward an ICC phenotype [2]. Here, KIT is linked to intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.
