In a subsequent study, Van de Rijn and coworkers showed in a series of 930 tumors that 16% stained positive for keratin 5/6 and/or 17 and that these basal keratin-positive tumors were associated with poor outcome in lymph-node-positive breast cancer patients, but not in tumors without lymph node metastases [8]. The gene discussed is KRT5; the disease is metastatic malignant neoplasm in the lymph nodes.
