Recently, several studies have reported that the sensitivity and specificity of CRP in differentiating systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and sepsis is around 60 to 90%.12 CRP is the prototype acute-phase protein, and its concentration rises sharply in response to various inflammatory stimuli, and particularly in response to interleukin-6 (IL-6).13 The gene discussed is CRP; the disease is systemic inflammatory response syndrome.
